Workshop Description

This workshop is designed to train you in the art of photographing horses and their riders.
The riders will be dressed in western clothing complete with leather, spurs, boots, ropes, etc.
The photo shoot will take place in the Santa Ana River bed in Norco, California
The water is between ankle and knee deep, shallow enough to walk in but deep enough to be careful in.
It would be appropriate for you to wear waders and boots into the riverbed, if you have them.
Your camera gear could get splashed on so be prepared to cover your camera and lens with plastic bags.
You will also receive a signed model release from each rider with a full release for personal & commercial use.

Itinerary

Sunday

1:30 - Meet in Norco, CA at a pre-determined location for a briefing on setting up your camera for Equestrian Photography
2:30 - drive down to the Santa Ana River bed to meet the horses and riders and begin the photo shoot
5:30 - the photo shoot is complete and we will head back to our original meeting location for final thoughts

Training will include:

General
Raw & JPG – which one is best for me
How to choose the right equipment for the job
Rules of Composition - how to use them and how to break them
The Rule of Thirds - what it is and how to use it for visual impact
Understanding the "right moment" for photographing action sequences

Camera
Basic camera set-up and usage
How to correctly set the White Balance
How to control your "depth-of-field" for visual impact
How the use of Manual will increase the visual impact of your images

Lenses & Filters
The do's and do not's of using Polarizing Filters
Selecting the right lens for the look that you desire
How to effectively use tele-extenders on your lenses

Tripods
Where, when and how to use a monopod effectively

Light - the most important of all
How to effectively find and use natural light any time of the day
Using natural light to your advantage for any type of photograph

Learn to "see" light and understand what a pro looks for in various lighting situations

Items to Bring

Although it does not matter what equipment you have,
you will get the most out of the workshop if your camera has
manual settings,
shoots RAW and has the ability to connect a cable release.

Camera body and fresh batteries
Lenses in the slightly wide angle to medium telephoto (70-200mm is excellent)

General Workshop Guidelines
and Helpful Information

We have a “Please tag-along policy” for our photography workshops.
We encourage you to bring your “significant other” with you because
some things were meant to be shared with the one you love!
However, they cannot be included in the training and learning part of the workshop.
If they want to be part of the “learning process”, they must be a registered student.

We will email you directions to our meeting place and a detailed
workshop schedule approximately 2 weeks before the workshop.

You are responsible for being at the meeting place at the designated time and have your photographic equipment with you.
Make sure your batteries are charged and you have plenty of CF or SD cards.
I would also suggest a waist-pack type camera
