Travel to Pismo Beach for the Monarch Butterflies
San Simeon for the Elephant Seals
and (if time permits) Julia Pfeiffer Burns SP and McWay Falls

January 23rd, 2010
and
January 24th, 2010

Each day will start at sunrise and conclude at sunset.
Our workshop will begin with the Elephant Seals on the beach just
below the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. N35 37.39   W121 09.50
The California Coastline project has this image of the area we will be photographing in.
The female Elephant Seals are usually "birthing" this time of the season on the beach.
The morning sun will give us ideal lighting to photograph the male Elephant Seals
fighting and defending their harem and the female Elephant Seals birthing their pups.

We will leave around noon to head south towards Pismo Beach, with a stop in Cambria for lunch,
and photograph the Monarch Butterflies with the afternoon sun shining through the eucalyptus trees.
The workshop will conclude when the sun sets... or you may leave earlier if you desire.

The workshop will include group and personal discussions on the following subjects:

Basic camera set-up and usage
How to correctly set the White Balance
How to set-up of your cameras Custom Functions & Personal Functions
How to use Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority & Manual
How to use your tripod & head most effectively
How to choose the right equipment for the job

Making the best use of natural light any time of the day
Professional exposure techniques using your cameras Histogram
Rules of Composition - how to use them and how to break them
When & how to photograph for HDR images
How to improve the visual impact of your photographs

Selecting the right lens for the look that you desire
Photographing "details" and how to use a macro lens

Understanding the "right moment" for photographing action sequences

If you use Canon equipment, I will allow use of my personal equipment during the workshop

Travel, sleeping accommodations and meals are on your own

I will be driving my Dodge Diesel Mega Cab 4WD truck if you are interested in carpooling with me.
The cost is $45 per person to help with fuel. I can take up to 3 people and their gear.
You must, however, be signed up for both days of the workshop.

The cost of each workshop is $125
(you can choose one day or both days)

We have a “Please tag-along policy” for our photography workshops.
We encourage you to bring your “significant other” with you because
some things were meant to be shared with the one you love!
However, they cannot be included in the training and learning part of the workshop.
If they want to be part of the “learning process”, they must be a registered student.
